c.1195-1236. Founder of the English Franciscan province. He was received into the Order at Pisa his native city, by St Francis, who sent him to Paris to erect a convent. Later he returned to Italy. In 1224 he was dispatched to England, and on 12 September arrived at Dover with eight other friars, four of them English. Shortly afterwards he established friaries at Canterbury and at Oxford. He engaged R Grossteste to teach in the latter which, (though Agnellus himself was not a scholar) rapidly became a famous centre of learning. He exercised considerable political influence in the conflict between Henry III and the Earl Marshal. Until the Reformation his remains were venerated at Oxford. His cultus was confirmed by Leo XIII in 1892. His feast is kept on 13 March, and (in the Order) on 7 May. (From FL Cross, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church).
