2nd March, St Chad, Bishop and Confessor

St Chad, Bishop and Confessor

Companion to St Egbert (27th April) in Ireland. On his return to England he became Abbot of Lastingham, and then Bishop of York, but on his onsecration being declared to be defective, he retired again to Lastingham. Later, he was made Bishop of the Mercians, and fixed his see at Lichfield. He died on 2nd March, 672.

Sacerdotes Dei, benedicite Dominum: sancti et humiles corde, laudate Deum. * Benedicite, omnia opera Domini, Domino: laudate et superexaltate eum in saecula.
O ye priests of the Lord, bless the Lord: O ye holy and humble of heart, praise God. * All ye works of the Lord, bless the Lord: praise and exalt Him above all for ever.
(Daniel 3:84,87,85)

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, qui nos beati Ceaddae Confessoris tui atque Pontificis, hodierna festivitate laetificas: tuam supplices exoramus clementiam; ut, cujus solemnia devotis officiis veneramur, ejus piis suffragiis vitae aeternae remedia consequamur.

Almighty and everlasting God, who dost gladden us by this day's solemnity of blessed Chad thy confessor and bishop, we humbly beseech Thy clemency: that we, who with devoted service venerate his festival, may, by his loving help, obtain the remedies of everlasting life.
(Collect)
